Lisandra’s Thoughts:
Wow… what a perfect novel for Christmas! Charles Dickens wrote this book in 1843 during a time when Christmas was being reimagined in England. Before the 19th century, Christmas was not celebrated in the way we see it today, with traditions like Christmas trees, ugly Christmas sweaters, and deep red colors. In fact, many of these customs were invented after the 1800s.
During earlier centuries, England frequently changed its reigning monarchy, which also led to religious shifts from Catholicism to Protestantism. As you may know, these two religions have different traditions and beliefs surrounding Christmas. Therefore, when the English settlers came to America, the celebration of Christmas was illegal in places like Boston, Massachusetts, until after the 1800s.
This British author helps readers understand the importance of respecting diverse beliefs and provides a glimpse into the revival of Christmas traditions. In the novel, Dickens introduces ghosts that emphasize deep red skirts—ironically, a color that soon became associated with Christmas traditions.
Recommendation:
This is a great read for those who enjoy supernatural themes, like ghosts and spirits! It also makes a wonderful holiday gift for readers.
