A look inspired by “the Mother’s legacy in early modern england” by jennefer heller (based on lady grace mildmay) part ii
For my second look, I drew inspiration from Grace Mildmay, a fascinating woman examined in The Mother's Legacy in Early Modern England by Jennifer Heller. Mildmay's work as a medical practitioner included unique recipes that utilized breastmilk and various ingredients, showcasing the intricate connections between motherhood, health, and societal beliefs during the 16th and 17th centuries.
As Heller notes, “Grace Mildmay's medical recipes call for breastmilk along with such wide-ranging ingredients as cloves, cinnamon, pennyroyal, pearls, sulphur, mercury, strawberry leaves, Rhenish wine, and egg whites” (Heller 54). This highlights the significance of breastmilk as a powerful substance for infants, and pearls were often associated with good luck and purity during pregnancy. Women adorned themselves with pearls, believing they offered protection and increased the supply of breastmilk—an essential element for nurturing.
The image of the unknown pregnant woman enveloped in pearls inspired this look, celebrating the elegance and symbolism of this timeless accessory.
