A "TWELFTH NIGHT" LOOK INSPIRED BY THE CREATIVE WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (Copy)
Happy New Year! And, most importantly, happy Twelfth Night! As holiday celebrations come to a close, I can’t think of a better play to kick off the year than Twelfth Night.
This look was inspired by the character Malvolio, one of Olivia's suitors alongside Sir Andrew and Sir Toby. In a scheme devised by Sir Andrew, Sir Toby, and the servant Maria, they prank Malvolio by convincing him that Olivia is in love with him. They create a letter instructing him to wear yellow stockings with criss-cross garters and to behave arrogantly towards the servants. Ecstatic at the thought of Olivia’s affection, Malvolio dons the yellow stockings to impress her. However, his odd behavior leads Olivia to conclude that he has gone mad, and she has him locked away, accused of insanity. Malvolio's yellow stockings symbolize an empowerment opportunity, reflecting how, even today, we are often judged and categorized based on our clothing due to societal expectations.
This look features a thrifted black oversized blazer, yellow stockings from Amazon to represent Malvolio, pointy black heels from ShopMandee to add a formal touch, and a colorful beaded headband from Forever 21 as an accessory.
"Remember who commended thy yellow stockings, and wished to see thee ever cross-gartered: I say, remember."
